U.S. geological surveys - federal and state - are developing a national digital Geoscience Information Network (GIN) that will provide easy access and interoperability to the thousands of data sets that they produce.   The GIN will be distributed, interoperable, use open source standards and common protocols, respect and acknowledges data ownership, foster communities of practice to grow, and provide for development of new web services and clients.
